Character: Kisaragi Gentarou
Series: Kamen Rider Fourze
Character Age: 18
Canon:
Once a upon a time (on his 17th birthday), a sullen, unsociable high-school student (Utahoshi Kengo) stumbled upon a package with a mysterious gift that looked suspiciously like a repurposed printer cartridge. In an attempt to hide his totally legitimate present from a fellow classmate, Kengo tossed the thing into a locker, which opened up a portal to the moon, where Kengo inherited the life's work of his astronaut father: defending the universe from evil with 40 different repurposed printer cartridges with (much to his chagrin) the help of an idiot in a latex suit, Kamen Rider Fourze, played by the enigmatic Kisaragi Gentarou. Yeah, we don't know either, and Kengo almost certainly wishes he didn't. Why? Because Kisaragi Gentarou is a brash, air-headed delinquent who never thinks before he acts. He's awful at academics, insubordinate to his superiors, and prizes friendship over all else. Wait, what?

Gentarou is an individual who accepts all of humanity—the good and the bad—and believes that the bond between people can achieve great things. He believes that everyone should treasure each other for who they are, and that everybody deserves to have a friend. He treats everyone, even those whom he's just met—regardless of their social status relative to him or how they've wronged him in the past—as a friend. He has absolutely no reservations about honestly (and idiotically) expressing his strong feelings for helping and befriending other people, and as a result often comes off as quite obnoxious. In short: For Gentarou, love conquers all, even things like not knowing how to do his homework or being told repeatedly not to wear a pompadour to school.

Sample Entry:

Hey, everybody! I'm Kisaragi Gen—

—Whoa, hold on, what'dya mean I gotta answer some questions? Oh man, what is this, an entrance exam?! I don't really know what's going on, but don't think I'm just gonna back down because I didn't study! Let's do this—I'm gonna ace your pants off! Oh yeah, you just watch!

Why are you joining our happy community?
Like I was tryin' to tell you earlier: I'm Kisaragi Gentarou—the guy who's gonna make friends with everybody in this camp! Yeah, you heard me! So watch out, Miss Director—you're just the type who needs someone by their side more than anyone—so you're definitely gonna be first! Prepare yourself, Lizzy, 'cause you and me and the rest of everybody else are gonna be best buds!

That's a promise. And I never break promises.

Do you think you are good in a crisis? Why?
Every moment of my life is a crisis of the heart! Not to brag, but I'd like to think I do pretty okay, y'know? It's all about putting forth your full effort! Why...? Hnm, I don't really know what to do a lot of the time, but things always turn out pretty okay. 'Cause I got my friends by my side—that's why I'll always be fine.

What if the crisis involved the end of the world? Please explain.
What's the difference? Anything that's worth bein' upset over is important to someone, even if it ain't to you. It doesn't matter whether or not the world ends or something like that. I'd try my best to fix it no matter what it was!

Do you find these questions increasingly unnerving? Why/Why not?
Nah. 'Cause you 'nd I are already buddies, and I don't mind sharing feelings with a friend.

If there was a good dog and a criminal both hanging from a cliff and you could only save one, which would you save and why?
—Oi, what's this "only save one" nonsense? Have a drink from the optimism fountain, buddy! Just one sip and you'll understand the river of youth that flows through me! Don't think this means I'm just gonna let the dirty guy go, either, he's gotta pay for whatever he's done—But it doesn't mean he just deserves to die.

You never know when you're the one that's gonna need a second chance—so give everyone else one until you have to find out.

Do you have a five year plan in mind?
Yeah. I do.

I'm gonna make one hundred million friends by then! I've already got a head start—I'm already one closer.

—Why are you such an idiot?
Hey! If you're tryin' to get me to take that last bit back, it's not going to work. So joke's on you, you got an idiot for a buddy now, and I'm not going anywhere!

Character: Totsuka Tatara
Series: K
Character Age: 22
Job: Counselor in Charge of Keeping the Memories Alive

Canon: In a world ruled by seven Kings, one young boy, Shiro, becomes caught in the crossfire. Accused of murdering a Clansman of HOMRA, the group that serves under the Red King, he now has to prove his innocence, not only to them but to the vassal of the former Colorless King, who before his death had predicted that Shiro would turn out to be evil. Add in the fact that he can't even trust his own memories, it's now turned into a race to get to the bottom of what really happened. Just how far down does this rabbit hole go, and can Shiro figure out who he really is before he ends up dead?

Known as the Weakest Executive of HOMRA, Tatara is the self-proclaimed vassal to the Red King. He's carefree and whimsical, and occasionally oblivious about the danger he has a habit of putting himself in. Friendly to everyone, he has a very laid-back demeanor and is optimistic to a fault. With a bit of a flair for the dramatic at times, Tatara is always picking up new hobbies and dropping them for whatever catches his fancy next. And even though he's part of a gang of violent thugs, he's not a fighter by any means. Instead he uses his calm presence and sharp intuition to help give his comrades the push they need in the right direction, and is always waiting with a smile for them to return.

Sample Entry:

Tell us about yourself in a few words.

Sure thing. My name is Totsuka Tatara. I'm twenty-two years old and I'm a part of HOMRA! My current hobbies are filming videos with an old-fashioned camera and learning how to skateboard. --Haha, I know, I know, you're probably thinking I totally don't look like the skating type, right? Just you wait, though. I'll master that kickflip and show them all I've totally got the skills.

Why are you joining our happy community?

I was brought here to keep the memories alive! That might sound a little strange and vague to some of you, but rest assured, I'm very good at it. You see I've been recording important events with that camera I mentioned for some time now because I want to treasure the time I've spent with friends and family. I think it's good to have because you never know when you might want to relive a special moment, right? Besides, this seems like it'll be quite the adventure. I've never been to a summer camp before, but after reading through the brochure, I could tell this was a place I definitely wanted to check out. There's a hut to make crafts in, and a pool-- Isn't it a little chilly for that, though? It is December, now that I think about it. Maybe someone here is into polar bear swimming?

If you could choose to bring three objects to a desert island, what would you bring and why?

I'd bring my camera to capture the beauty of my surroundings. I'd bring my guitar to write songs to pass the time. Hmm, for the third thing, I guess it would have to be water, right? I wouldn't want to die of thirst, after all. How long will I be staying on this theoretical island?

Can you swim? Y/N

I can swim. I'm not the most athletic guy, but I can at least do that!

- Could you still do it under extreme distress? Y/N

Extreme duress as in my life is in danger? I think so.

-- While dragging someone else to shore? Y/N

How big is the person I'm dragging? Are they conscious? Not that those things really matter, I guess. You do what you have to to save someone when they're in trouble, right?

--- While something, let's say a tentacle, tries to drag you under? Y/N

Haha, this is starting to get pretty complicated! I would definitely try my best, but see these arms? They have no guns on them, and I'm not really the fighting sort of person, so I think dragging someone to shore would probably put me at my limit.

---- How would you handle that situation?

Well, to be honest, I'd have to actually be in that situation to give you an exact answer on how I would handle it, but I'm sure things would work out somehow! I'm pretty good at staying calm, you see? It's rare for me to panic, and I think I'm able to talk to just about anyone. Maybe the owner of the tentacle would be willing to sit down and chat instead of trying to kill us? I'm sure we could work out our differences. My dashing smile can be pretty effective, and sometimes all people really need when things start to get crazy is an ear that will listen.

What do you expect from your camp experience?

To have fun. I'm in the prime of my youth right now, you know, and I want to experience as many new and different things as I possibly can. Life's too short, and you should live it to its fullest.

Character: Taiga Kagami
Series: Kuroko's Basketball
Character Age: 16

Canon:The Generation of Miracles is a group of five Japanese high school first years, with incredible basketball abilities. Kuroko's Basketball is about the phantom sixth member of this group, whose ability is just how little presence he has on the court, and the Seirin High School basketball team, which he joins. Together, the Seirin team works to become the number one basketball team in Japan, but in order to do that they have to get through these five geniuses (and a whole lot more).

Taiga Kagami is another first year on the Seirin team. He's a transfer student from America, and it is often said by observers that he is possibly the only high school player in Japan that could surpass the Generation of Miracles. Although he tends to give a first impression of being your standard hot-blooded high school athlete, it's more that he's just intensely focused on his goal to take down the Generation of Miracles. His ambition and fighting spirit are both his best and worst traits, since they simultaneously drive him forward and drive him away from others. But with time, he becomes a better teammate and learns to make more careful decisions ... although not entirely.

NOTE: Kagami is, for all his badassery, deathly afraid of dogs. He also has an utterly bottomless stomach.

Sample Entry:
Tell us about yourself in a few words.
Yeah, sure. My name's Taiga Kagami, I'm a first year at Seirin High School, and I play power forward for the Seirin basketball team. I spent about eight years in America, though, so I already know the drill here.

Why are you joining our happy community?
Huh? Well the letter I got said that this was a basketball camp, so I figured it couldn't hurt to take it. I mean, I could use some work on my defense, and a "Camp For Ultimate Defense" can't be bad, right?

If there was a good dog and a criminal both hanging from a cliff and you could only save one, which would you save and why?
Th- the dog! Obviously! It might take a while, just to make sure that it wouldn't try to attack me while i was saving it, but who the hell would save a criminal instead?

Do you have a five year plan in mind?
Well, after I finish high school, if I don't get recruited to play, I guess I'll go to university and play there. Isn't it more important to think about the more immediate future though? I've got my goal, it's to get Seirin to be number one in Japan!

If you could choose to bring three objects to a desert island, what would you bring and why?
A basketball, a strong opponent, and a cooler full of food! That's gotta count as one item, right? Except — wait, I wouldn't be able to play basketball with all that sand, right? Maybe just a hoop instead of the strong opponent ... but that'd be even more boring, huh. Can I come back to this later?

What would you consider to be your “soul” animal and why? (this is for purely scientific purposes and will not have consequences during your stay at all. Trust us! :))
These questions're weird ... is saying something like "tiger" way too obvious, 'cause my name sounds sorta like it? I've never really thought about it.

Do you have a cute catch phrase? Please demonstrate.
Oi, do I look like a mascot character to you? Don't take the name too literally!

Would you be able to dispose of the flesh of the undead? How?
What the hell is that supposed to mean? I'm not gonna touch any — flesh, okay! Unless it's cooked through and came from a cow!

Do you find these questions increasingly unnerving? Why/Why not?
Well they were kinda normal at first but now I'm not sure what the hell you guys're getting at anymore. Who asks for a survey like this for a basketball camp, anyways — isn't the most important thing being able to show you how I play? Just let me do that already!

Character: Edward Elric
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003 anime)
Character Age: 17

Canon: “Humankind cannot gain anything without sacrificing something of equal value.” That is the principle of Equivalent Exchange – the first law of alchemy. Edward and Alphonse Elric live in a world where the study of alchemy is alive and well. So when their mother dies, they decide to resurrect her with Human Transmutation...the ultimate taboo. Their sin comes with an awful price, however, as Edward loses his arm and leg, and Alphonse loses his whole body – Edward binding his soul to a suit of armor in a fit of desperation. Together they decide to seek after what they've lost, which leads Edward to become a State Alchemist. And eventually leads them to seek the Philosopher’s Stone – a mythical object fabled to bypass the laws of Equivalent Exchange.

Edward Elric is at once supremely confident and deeply insecure. He's an excellent alchemist – a true genius – and he's very well aware of that fact. At the same time, he was the one who suggested that he and his brother attempt Human Transmutation, so he blames himself for the terrible events that followed. Regardless, his general demeanor is abrasive and arrogant, and he tends to get along better with young children than adults – especially if those adults are authority figures. And, despite his guilt complex, he can also be incredibly self-righteous, rarely shying away from telling people what he believes about how they ought to think, and how they ought to behave. This, coupled with an almost inhuman level of determination, has lead to a lot problems for both him and the people around him.

Note: Edward is taken from the end of the 2003 anime, but from before the Conqueror of Shamballa.

Tell us about yourself in a few words.

A “few words”, huh? Well, I guess there isn't that much to say. My name is Edward Elric, 17 years old, and I'm a scientist. Right now I'm focusing on rocketry, but my biggest field of expertise is...chemistry. And I'm damn good at both, if I do say so myself.

Why are you joining our happy community?

I hear you have a pretty good library.

What do you expect from the counselors?

If they're anything like the types of people who are usually in charge, they'll all be arrogant bastards with delusions of grandeur. Or psychotic nutcases who fool everyone around them by always having a smile on their face, pretending to be reasonable. Whatever the case, they'd better not get in my way. I won't cause any trouble as long as they remember that.

Why are you a valuable asset to this camp?

I'm a genius, so I'm a valuable asset to any place I go. I don't think I'll help much in the way of that “camp spirit” crap that I've heard everyone talking about, but I can help with pretty much anything else. You shouldn't underestimate just how much a good scientist can achieve if he puts his mind to it.

If there was a good dog and a criminal both hanging from a cliff and you could only save one, which would you save and why?

What kind of stupid question is that? Under what circumstances would I not be able to save both of them? If you're gonna try and get a sense of a person's ethics, at least do it with logically valid dilemmas. Otherwise the responses you'll get are gonna be as full of crap as the original question.

Would you be able to dispose of the flesh of the undead? How?

Are you serious? Okay, fine – of course I'd be able to. Hypothetically speaking, I would determine its chemical composition and deconstruct it through the necessary chemical reactions. Undead flesh is still just flesh, after all, so that should suffice to get rid of it. If that didn't work, and I was dealing with some kinda “supernatural” force beyond my understanding, I'd hit the books to determine a possible weakness. Or look for experts who've encountered the phenomenon before. Because anything “supernatural” is really just a natural phenomenon that we've yet to find a rational explanation for. So, no matter how impossible it may seem to start out with – in the end, I'd find a way.

Can you perform a flawless headshot? If not, and if your life depended on it, how many hours a week would you be willing to spend on the shooting range?

Guns aren't really my style, so I have no idea. I get that killing your enemy is sometimes necessary, no matter how much we might wish that it wasn't. But guns make killing way too...convenient. And anyway – with maybe a couple of exceptions, people who rely too much on firearms are just asking to be taken down by opponents with superior hand-to-hand skills – so my time would be better spent brushing up on those.

Character: Kyouko Kirigiri
Series: Dangan Ronpa: Academy of Hope and High School Students of Despair
Character Age: 17
Canon: The prestigious Kibougamine Gakuen (Hope’s Peak Academy) is home to the world’s “hope:” high school students who’ve earned the right to call themselves the best of the best in their field of expertise, from business, to fashion and even pornographic fan comics. So what happens when the school of dreams turns out to be ba nightmarish prison and the only way out is to kill a classmate? Add in more incentives to kill and the result is tragic. But a death is only the beginning: when murders take place, innocent students have to correctly identify the culprits, or they’ll get executed instead.

From the start, Kyouko Kirigiri proves to be a major asset to the investigative team: she’s observant, intelligent and cool under pressure. She’s methodically focused on solving the crimes; not as the lead investigator, but as an advisor. Despite her seemingly emotionless, distrustful nature and blunt words, the information and insight she provides is useful in helping others draw the right conclusions. While she refuses to simply hand over an answer and encourages or mocks others into taking a more active role in investigations, she often steps in when she determines they’re too incompetent to handle things properly. Even though hunting for possible clues stashed in the underwear of a corpse garners the disgust and suspicion of her classmates, she doesn’t see much point in explaining her actions, or divulging her innermost thoughts and feelings.

Sample Entry:

Tell us about yourself in a few words.

I’m Kyouko Kirigiri. My privacy is important to me and I expect people to respect that. Since I’m being asked to use a “few words,” I believe that’s sufficient.

Why are you joining our happy community?

If you insist on making me answer this survey, I’m going to ask a few questions myself.

As I understand it, there isn’t much to be happy about, is there? You have a community of individuals falsely accused of murder, who’ve been unable to prove their innocence. Whether this is due to a lack of opportunity, or incompetence on the part of those stuck here remains to be seen.

For the sake of argument, let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and say it’s the former: Are the hazards here part of some system to psychologically torture the prisoners into either confessing to a crime they didn’t commit, or suppress a proper investigation? Is their sheer outlandishness meant to make those who do manage to leave and remember this place sound too crazy to be believed? On that note, why is the memory loss so inconsistent? Is it due to the strength or weakness of the individual’s mind, or is it a flaw in the system that induces this unusually specific amnesia? Does departure from this place mean that those who’ve left are cleared of suspicion? If so, why do they return?

Please submit the answers to me by the end of the day.

Do you consider yourself squeamish? Please provide an example.

I don’t. I had a suspicion someone who had been murdered was concealing an important piece of evidence in his underwear, so I retrieved it.

If you could get away with committing one crime and suffer absolutely no consequences, what would you do and why?

Nothing. Even if I weren’t judged by the law, I would still have to answer to myself.

I hope you realize how pointless--no, dangerous this question is. Don’t delude people with fantasies of getting away with a crime, even in a hypothetical scenario. The fact is, it’s impossible to commit a criminal act and evade the consequences. It may take time, but everyone gets caught eventually.

That said, I would be interested in seeing how others answer this, especially in conjunction with the previous question.

Would you be able to dispose of the flesh of the undead? How?

The same way one disposes of a dead body, I suppose. However, burial won’t work, since the undead don’t need to breathe and could dig their way out, provided that they had the appendages to do so. It could be burned. It could also be dissolved in acid, assuming one has enough of it on hand, but that would be difficult to obtain and transport. Anything else would be just as complex and inefficient, so burning would be the best option.

With that in mind, what’s the purpose of creating a camp housing the undead if we’re expected to dispose of them? Another distraction to keep us from investigating the murder? For someone so concerned about discovering the culprit, why would the Director want to make things so difficult for herself?

Those answers should be submitted along with the ones for the questions I’ve posed earlier in this survey.

Drive-by voting for the one app I'm canon-familiar for while I have time! Unfortunately, my vote for Ed was an out. I realize you're taking him from the 2001 anime, but the voice didn't ring true for me, which is really important (for me, anyway!) when it comes to the few apps whose series I'm familiar with. 8(a Good luck, though!

In for all but Edward and abstain on Kigiri.

Taiga, you were a wibbled in since I don't think you utilized the survey quite as well as you could have and it was a bit dry. But I got enough of a character to feel confident to go with in.

Edward, your answer about deconstruction was awesome. But, unfortunately, the rest of the app didn't feel like Edward at all. Something was off about the voice.

My only out was Ed.

Like the others who responded here, I think that the voice needs some work. It's weird, because in the canon section you do a good job of describing who Ed is and you clearly know his character, but in the voice itself there was just something missing. The thing is, like you said, Ed is abrasive. He's loud, he's in your face! I think part of the problem was he seemed too calm here. Even if he was calling people bastards and getting annoyed, it was still a bit muted... if that makes sense.

Also, the survey format totally gives you a way to throw in a short joke. JUST SAYIN'.

If you don't get in and decide to try again, I'd be happy to beta! FMA is one canon I'm very familiar with.

Gentarou, Tatara, and Kirigiri were my ins!

Kagami, I have only seen a little of your canon but overall this felt more EXPLOSIVE and less grumbly-growly than I was expecting, on top of which your canon section didn't really help illuminate how YOU felt about the issue because while you say he's hot-blooded and driven I feel like there are many ways a character could sound while keeping within that general description. But again, I'm darn close to canonblind considering how long the thing is.

Ed I abstained on. It's just been too long since I've seen the series /o\
