Character: Yoshino Takigawa
Series: Zetsuen no Tempest
Character Age: 16
Canon: When your closest friend gets caught up in a revenge plot that coincidentally involves helping a mage control giant magical trees that may or may not destroy the world, what choice do you have but to go along to try and keep things as sane as possible? This is what happens to Yoshino Takigawa, and together with his friend Mahiro, the two wind up caught in the middle of a group of mages who are trying to prevent the destruction of the world as we know it.
Yoshino is generally easy going, and able to quickly adapt to whatever situation may arise around him even as he questions the strangeness of new events. Despite his moments of dry sarcasm or deep brooding, his calm personality allows him to get along with other people. He enjoys being able to work through things logically in order to get to the bottom of a problem. Even though he sees his 'role' in life as one where he has to make sure a tragedy doesn't occur to those around him, Yoshino won't hesitate to manipulate or secretly work against those around him or sacrifice everything in order to accomplish his goals.
Note: The characters in this series are prone to quoting Shakespeare, particularly Hamlet.
Sample Entry:
Well, they say it’s a good idea to get to know new people but. . . this is always awkward. Hi, I’m Yoshino Takigawa, second year in high school. I have no magical powers of my own, and I somehow got caught up with trying to save the world. Mm, that sounds dramatic, but it’s not really the kind of thing you can say just happens, either. In the first place, a high school student claiming to be involved in that they’re doing anything to save the world is usually the sign of having too much free time. So, it’s understandable if you think I’m just making up some story, but I really was there when things started to get serious.
Actually, to tell you the truth, being there wasn’t my idea, and coming here wasn’t, either. This guy I know has been dragging me all over the place, and he thought that coming here would be a good idea even though he wouldn't tell me why. Not that I really mind that much. I feel that after some of the things I’ve experienced recently, I can handle a lot being thrown at me. Please don't take that too literally, though.
Now that that's out of the way, there are some things I'm wondering about. Exactly what kind of summer camp is run the way this one seems to be? Even that strange survey we had to fill out, for example. There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy here in Camp, but isn't it just too suspicious to have to answer questions about tentacles and headshots right from the start like that? I’m not saying that you’re a mastermind and you’ve got all the answers or anything like that, but there are definitely some serious issues that should probably be addressed.
There’s something rotten in... where exactly is Camp located, again?
Character: Mahiro Fuwa
Series: Zetsuen no Tempest
Character Age: 16
Canon: All Mahiro Fuwa wanted to do was find out who murdered his sister and get revenge. In plotting his vengeance, he ends up working with the world’s most powerful mage, Hakaze Kusaribe. Marooned on an island after being betrayed by her clan, she agrees to help Mahiro find his sister’s killer as long as he carries out her wishes in putting a stop to her clan’s activities. And to help him even more in his plot is his and his sister’s friend, Yoshino Takigawa. Now, these two young boys immerse themselves in the world of magic, manipulation, and murder: which they both refer to as a tragedy.
According to Yoshino, Mahiro’s sole reason for existence is vengeance. Born to an upper-class family, he's spoiled, conceited, and absolutely selfish. His only goal is to find his sister's killer, and all his interests revolve around it. Beneath all that is an erratic, perceptive and well-read young man, who has memorised various Shakespearean works, particularly Hamlet, and often quotes it. He's not the friendliest person around, and can be prone to using harsh words, sarcasm, and hostility when it comes to people whom he thinks isn't worth his time. He behaves as if he's royalty, and will only act on something that benefits him. In his tragedy, he plays the protagonist and the villain at the same time.
(Note: The series itself pays homage to William Shakespeare’s works. Mahiro, as a character, alludes to Hamlet from the Shakespearean tragedy of the same title. He will abandon all of his morals and reason for the sake of revenge.)
Sample Entry:
Tell us about yourself in a few words.
My name's Mahiro Fuwa, sixteen years old. I am very proud, revengeful, ambitious, with more offences at my beck than I have thoughts to put them in. In layman’s terms, I’m not friendly. But sure, we can be “friends”, if it’ll stop you from being annoying. Just know that I’m not going to work for your sake. It should be the other way around.
Why are you joining our happy community?
Yoshino made me come here. Don’t believe whatever he tells you; he’s the one who wanted to go here, not me. He could be meeting his girlfriend here, and brought me just to annoy me. He keeps telling people that he has one, but won’t really introduce anyone to her. It’s the perfect romance, kind of like Romeo and Juliet.
Honestly, I don't care if this place has talking animals, a weird octopus, or can revive the dead or not, since that's not what I'm after. I don’t really have any plans while I’m here. If you want me to laze on the beach because that seems like a nice activity in this “happy community”, then sorry, it doesn’t seem like it to me. You know what sounds good, though? Finding my sister’s killer.
Oh, right... why I’m here. Go ask Yoshino. He's got brown hair and looks like a servant. He's probably already off trying to play nice with everyone here by now.
Would you be able to dispose of the flesh of the undead? How?
O, answer me! Let me not burst in ignorance; but tell why thy canonized bones, hearsed in death, have burst their cerements?
Hamlet. Are you familiar with it? There’s a ghost in it. Of course, undead doesn't necessarily equate to ghost. But, really, I really don't care if I'm disposing of the dead, undead, or living. Whatever, however— just as long as it's going to lead me to my sister's killer.
If there was a good dog and a criminal both hanging from a cliff and you could only save one, which would you save and why?
How would you even classify if the dog is good or not? If both of them are hanging from the same cliff, the two of them must be in it together. The dog could be the criminal’s pet, or the criminal might’ve kidnapped the dog. Either way, both of them are bound to die one way or another, whether I save them or not.
What’s this question for, anyway? Is there a right or wrong answer? These kinds of questions are for test essays, and usually there’s no right or wrong answer. But if there is, then what do I get if I answer it correctly? If it’s something good, then I’ll change my answer accordingly.
Can you perform a flawless headshot? If not, and if your life depended on it, how many hours a week would you be willing to spend on the shooting range?
I can perform a flawless headshot, sure. I still don't know the name of my sister's killer, but if you give me a picture, I'll put it to good use as target practice. I'll be at the shooting range from morning 'til twilight, even if I obviously don’t have to practice anymore.
A villain kills my sister; and for that, I, her sole brother, do this same villain send to heaven. Of course, if that place exists or not is another question.
Character: Billy Kaplan/Wiccan
Series: Marvel Comics
Character Age: 17
Canon: If you found out that you had reality warping powers after you accidentally gave a bully an electric shock, would you:
a) join a superhero team initially dedicated to stopping a time travelling villain, while calling yourself ‘Asgardian’;
b) be utterly convinced that the lady that awoke your powers is actually your preincarnation’s mother;
c) adopt the codename ‘Wiccan’ despite being a gay Jewish fanboy whose closest experience with the faith is watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer;
d) quit being a superhero after your changeling fantasy storyline got two team members killed;
e) do all of the above.
If you answered (e), you’re Billy Kaplan. An unabashed Avengers nerd, Billy wanted to be a hero like them, and he has the temperament for it: he’s self-effacing, determined and he wants to make things better for his loved ones. Unfortunately, Billy can also be impulsive and make bad choices for well-intentioned reasons, thoughtless, whiny and cynical as only a teenaged boy can be, and sometimes it seems that his preferred food is his own foot. If anything though, Billy’s greatest flaws are his malleable moral compass and a tendency to be self-absorbed. He means well! He’s just really bad at making good choices.
For the canon familiar: Billy is taken from around the middle of Young Avengers v2 #1.
Sample Entry:
Tell us about yourself in a few words.
All right? Uhhh, hi. I’m Billy. Billy Kaplan. And I have no idea how I got here. I just wish that it was the first time I woke up somewhere strange. Or the first time I woke up with no idea what just happened. This is just the first time that it’s not my fault.
Why are you joining our happy community?
Are you using “happy” like Happy Tree Friends? Also I think my mom would have something to say about me joining a zombie camp. There is no way I can put that on a college essay without everyone thinking I'm really weird or that I think I'm the next director for Blair Witch Project Number ... whatever they're up to now.
What would you consider your soul animal and why? (this is for purely scientific purposes and will not have consequences during your stay at all. Trust us! :))
That’s not suspicious at all. Something with opposable thumbs? They do say that the thumb is the reason why humans are at the top of the food chain ... and I like being able to open doors. Or maybe a cat. Yeah, make it a cat, cats have nine lives. What? It’s funny.
Can you swim? Y/N
Yeah, my parents made me learn.
- Could you still do it under extreme distress? Y/N
What do you mean by “extreme duress”? Am I drowning?
-- While dragging someone else to shore? Y/N
Oh. That makes sense. You should have said that first! Yeah, I can do that.
--- While something, let’s say a tentacle, tries to drag you under? Y/N
Where did that come from? I know New York can be weird but normal civilians don’t normally run into tentacles. I’m pretty sure they don’t. Someone would have told me if it happened a lot. And as I am a normal civilian, I wouldn’t run into that.
---- How would you handle that situation?
Why am I even in that situation? Anyway, I’d swim to shore, with the other person, and then find an adult to get them to a hospital. And I’d definitely make sure someone knew about the tentacle in there. Talking about the tentacle, what’s it even attached to? Is it just some random hypothetical tentacle that grabs people? A kraken? Cthulhu? Please tell me it’s not Cthulhu.
Would you like to find out? She likes to get up close and personal with teenaged boys.
And this survey just got really creepy. No? Please tell me you don't ask everyone this ... no, I changed my mind. Please tell me you do ask everyone this. I am okay with not being special.
Do you have a list of people you’d like to get caught under mistletoe with as a personal Christmas present? (If not, we can provide a list of people to start with!)
I’m Jewish. We don’t really … do … Christmas. Or mistletoe. Or kissing people other than my long term boyfriend, though that’s not a Jewish thing. That’s a normal person thing.
Do you find these questions increasingly unnerving? Why/Why not?
Uh, yeah? I think anyone would find them unnerving. You asked me what my soul animal was -- wait, were you asking if I were a furry? How did I miss that? And now there’s Cthulhu and way too much interest in my love life. There is no way that is not creepy. If this is seriously the entry survey for that new convention for comics, fanfiction, unassorted media and design, I think I'll go to Comic-Con instead.
Character: Asami Sato
Series: The Legend of Korra
Character Age: 17/18
Canon: It’s been sixteen years since the previous Avatar of Avatar: The Last Airbender died after successfully uniting the four nations of the world together. While the world seems to be at peace at the moment, Korra, the new Avatar, has her work cut out for her as conflict rises between benders, those who can manipulate the elements, and overwhelmingly disadvantaged non-benders. Republic City, an industrialized city inhabited by benders and non-benders from all four nations, is the centre of this growing unrest. Tired of being treated as second-class citizens, non-benders have begun a rebellion to overthrow the benders led by a mysterious masked man known as Amon.
Asami is one of the few non-benders who is not only against the rebellion, but also one of Korra’s friends (canonically nicknamed Team Avatar). Although the daughter of a wealthy automobile tycoon, Asami has proven that she is not the spoiled daddy’s little girl others think she is. Both kind and resourceful, Asami not only convinced her father to sponsor Mako, Bolin, and Korra when they had no money for a competition, she also opened her home to Mako and Bolin when they faced the risk of going back on the streets. But don’t confuse her kindness with weakness; despite being the only member of Team Avatar who can’t bend, she more than makes up for it with her self-defense skills and quick thinking. When not helping the Avatar save the world, Asami's main hobby is anything auto-related.
Note: Satomobile is the name of the vehicles built by Future Industries, the company Asami’s father runs.
Sample Post:
Oh my gosh--I’m so sorry! Are you alright, sir? How many fingers am I holding up? I’m not sure “reeogh” is an actual number but it sounded close enough to three. We better check that you don’t have a concussion though, just to be on the safe side. I’m sorry, I’m usually a better driver than this. At first I thought that one of my tires got blown out but they look exactly the same as they did when I checked them earlier. And unless you’ve got some giant Badgermoles around these parts there definitely weren’t any bumps or holes on the road big enough to make me swerve like that. I’m a little worried about the weird dent I saw in the back, though. You’d think it was some kind of bull that did it except it would have to be made of metal to even leave a mark on my car.
But that’s just crazy. I mean, robotic bulls? I wasn't born yesterday, you know.
Anyway, that’s not important. What matters now is making sure you’re okay. Can you stand? Oh good, it seems like you can, even if you’re swaying a little too much for my comfort. I hope I didn’t hit you too hard, did I? Normally I’d believe you if you say you are but you don’t look so good. Your skin’s literally turning green and you look pretty dehydrated if your dry lips are anything to go by. It’s unseasonably warm today, too, and I’d never forgive myself if I just left you out here in the middle of nowhere. Besides, I saw a sign a mile back saying something about a camp. “Camp Fuku Die,” I think? The rest of the letters were singed off so that’s... encouraging, but it’s still better than nothing. I’m sure we can find a hospital of some sort once we get there. Let me give you a lift, it’s the least I can do.
Oh no, please don’t run away. I get that you’re probably a little freaked out by cars right now but I promise you that it’s perfectly safe. It’s the newest Satomobile my father’s company made, top of the line if I do say so myself. Yeah, it’s a nice day and all, but you have to admit that walking is kind of overrated, especially if you can travel in style. And if it makes you feel better, I'll try not to go over the speed limit this time.
Er, sir? That’s the driver’s side you’re trying to open, the passenger’s seat is over there. Wow, you must’ve hit your head harder than I thought if you can’t open the door. Here, let me help you--aah! Sir, I know that you’re probably not exactly in your right mind at the moment but I’d really appreciate it if you let go of my arm. Listen, I’m trying to help you and the sooner you let go, the sooner we can get this over with.
… Okay, I don’t know if this is just part of the culture here, but your teeth are getting a little too close to my arm for my liking. Help or no help, if you don’t let go of me in three seconds, you’re going to be in a world of hurt.
One... two... three... Heeyah!
To be fair, I did warn you that would happen.
Character: Hakaze Kusaribe
Series: Zetsuen no Tempest
Character Age: Late teens
Canon: In this world there are two gods known as the Tree of Genesis and the Tree of Exodus; both of them, though, have been in deep sleep after a conflict many years ago. The Kusaribe clan, made up of mages who worship Genesis, have the task of protecting the world’s logic and making sure that the Tree of Exodus does not rise again. Hakaze is the clan’s princess as well as the most powerful mage in the world. However, she is betrayed, stuffed in a barrel, and marooned on a desert island without the means to leave on her own. In order to aid her escape she uses magic to enlist the help of Mahiro Fuwa, a teenager who wants revenge against his sister’s murderer, as well as his childhood friend, Yoshino Takigawa. Together, the three of them try to save the world from godly plantlife.
When people say that Hakaze is the most powerful mage, they really mean it. She’s favored by the Tree of Genesis, which means that the world’s logic always sides with her. If she wills for something enough, it will happen. Because of that, she is very overconfident and is pretty blunt. She always takes charge of situations, and can be somewhat overbearing while doing so. But despite that, she is very loving towards those she cares for and is very dedicated to her work as a mage. Highly intelligent and determined, it’s rather difficult to knock her down from her proud pedestal. Unless you bring up Yoshino, anyway, because then Hakaze has a tendency of acting like an awkward schoolgirl with a crush. If he’s involved, she may throw out her principles for his sake. And whether or not that’s a good thing is up for debate.
Note: The series is heavily influenced by Shakespeare, especially Hamlet and The Tempest. Hakaze, however, isn’t very knowledgeable of either.
Sample Entry:
Tell us about yourself in a few words.
I am Hakaze Kusaribe, the princess of the Kusaribe clan. Although you obviously already know that, or else I wouldn’t be here right now.
Why are you joining our happy community?
I received a letter from an Elizabeth Sayre, who very humbly invited me to take a look around her camp. She claimed it was a center for worshiping Genesis, and that she would be honored if I paid a visit and talked about what my duties are as a mage. Of course I was suspicious right away and decided to take a look for myself. And just as I thought, this place has absolutely nothing to do with any of that nonsense she claimed. I can’t believe anyone would think that such a flimsy lie would fool me! Unless her actual objective was to just get me here so I’d be trapped, then I guess she did a pretty good job of that. Hmph . . .
What do you expect from your camp experience?
I plan to find out exactly what’s going on here. People being taken from their homes? Small creatures that bring you back from the dead, as well as zombies? This camp goes against the world’s logic in such a way that makes my head spin! While I may be here against my will for the time being, I’m definitely going to use this time wisely. So watch your back, Elizabeth. You’re going to regret lying to me.
Do you think you are good in a crisis? Why?
There’s probably an appropriate Hamlet quote I could use here, but sadly I haven’t had the time to memorize plays unlike some people. To reply to the question, I was raised to deal with crises. You could say I was even born to do it. I have a lot of experience under my belt, and I’m pretty powerful, if I do say so myself. I’ve learned that most things can’t handle a good punch to the face from me!
What if the crisis involved the end of the world? Please explain.
You might as well call that another Monday for me. Like I said, I was basically born to deal with such events. I’ve put a lot of effort into protecting this world from any evil that may try to harm it, so you can bet there’s no way I will allow it to end on my watch! Although I’m really not sure why I’m being asked these questions when you already made it obvious that you know the answers to them. I guess this might just be a way to waste my time. If that’s the case, then congrats on another successful scheme considering I’m still going along with this.
Can you swim? Y/N Of course I can! Who do you think you’re talking to?
- Could you still do it under extreme distress? Y/N I can do many things under extreme distress, thank you very much.
-- While dragging someone else to shore? Y/N Hm, I haven’t actually tested this out, but I’m sure it’ll be easy for me.
--- While something, let’s say a tentacle, tries to drag you under? Y/N I—what? Why exactly are tentacles involved now?
---- How would you handle that situation? Exactly why would that situation even come up?! Maybe I should take a look at the ocean to be safe . . .
If you could choose to bring three objects to a desert island, what would you bring and why?
. . . Ha ha ha. Very funny.
Character: Momo / Gouda Takeshi
Series: Kimi wa Pet
Character Age: 20
Canon: Kimi wa Pet is the story of a woman and her pet. It begins on a rainy night, when imposingly tall, imposingly educated, imposingly successful journalist Iwaya Sumire returns home from a stressful day at work and finds a poor injured stray hiding in a cardboard box outside her apartment. She brings him in and nurses him back to health, after which she names him Momo and decides to keep him as a pet. The rest of the series follows Sumire's adventures in balancing her career, a relationship, and the demands and benefits of pet ownership. However, Momo is no ordinary pet. He just happens to be a human boy whose given name is Gouda Takeshi.
Takeshi is a talented and driven dancer who studied dance from the age of two, despite his father's protests. Unfortunately, he never grew tall enough to land lead roles, and so turned from ballet to modern dance, much to his mother's disapproval. After running away from home and hoboing around the city for awhile, he landed on Sumire's doorstep and decided to stay. Their relationship is fairly unique--in return for a place to live and being cared for, Sumire treats Momo like a pet, not an equal human being. He is bathed, fed, walked, and played with, and is also witness to Sumire's true self, something she is afraid to show to anyone else, especially a romantic partner. As Takeshi, he is cool, focused, and sometimes ruthlessly dedicated to himself. As Momo, however, he is sweet, more than a little mischievous, and dedicated wholly to Sumire-chan. He loves and understands her with all the focus of a good pet, sometimes better than she knows herself, all the while patiently waiting for Sumire to realize that her Momo isn’t actually a dog.
Note: Takeshi Gouda (surname and given name switched around from Momo’s) is the name of a Doraemon character.
Sample Entry:
Tell us about yourself in a few words.
Which me do you want to know? My name is Momo, and I’m Sumire-chan’s pet. Sometimes my owner is difficult, but most of the time she takes excellent care of me. She feeds me, shampoos my hair, lets me sleep on her lap, and sometimes we even go for walks. Life with Sumire-chan is wonderful~♥
That’s the important one.
My name is also Gouda Takeshi. I’m 20 years old, I dance, and I’m pretty good at it. That’s not being egoistic, other people tell me so. I wasn’t tall enough for ballet, so I went into modern dance instead. Being tall doesn’t matter, I can still play the ‘prince’. Sometimes Sumire-chan will even come see me dance.
Why are you joining our happy community?
There was an option? I guess I missed it, with all the getting shut in my box and tossed here. Hitting me in the head with the stack of paperwork was a nice touch. The box is mine, I’m keeping it, by the way. It has sentimental value. Just making that clear in writing.
Am I really supposed to answer this seriously? If Sumire-chan is here, I’ll join your ‘happy community’ happily as can be. If there’s a good studio, I might consider it. Otherwise, I’d rather pass.
Do you have any deep personal traumas you might inexplicably be compelled to share in this questionnaire? Please describe.
When I was younger, my terrible slave-driver of a mother used to work me to the bone, making deliveries for her store, and my friends always made fun of my beautiful singing voice. And there was this blue robot...
Are you lying on your previous answer?
Of course~ That’s Takeshi Gouda!
Do you think you are good in a crisis? Why?
I think I keep a pretty cool head. That’s how Sumire-chan’s boyfriend ended up thinking that we’re related for all that time. I’m much better at those sorts of situations than she is. When you’re dancing, you have to be sure. It takes a lot of confidence to keep working and working to learn and improve, not to mention performing. If you don’t trust yourself and your body, you’re only going to fall.
I don’t like violence, though. If I get too hurt, how can I dance? Not to mention my beautiful face~ Please help me protect it!
What if the crisis involved the end of the world? Please explain.
Eeh? Come on now, this isn’t some kind of video game. Is it? Did I somehow get transported into the TV? Will I be eaten by zombies? Or worse, pro wrestlers? Pro wrestling zombies? This could be a nightmare! Or a dream.
Can you swim? Y/N Y
- Could you still do it under extreme distress? Y/N Y
-- While dragging someone else to shore? Y/N Y
--- While something, let’s say a tentacle, tries to drag you under? Y/NY N What is this question?!?!
---- How would you handle that situation?
This is getting a bit creepy. The zombie pro-wrestlers really are coming for me, aren’t they. Tentacle zombie pro-wrestlers.
Do you find these questions increasingly unnerving? Why/Why not?
Because tentacle zombie pro-wrestlers, obviously. Also, seriously, this is supposed to be a camp? Like, for kids? Someone is really irresponsible and likely to be sued.
Character: Iwaya Sumire
Series: Kimi wa Pet (Tramps Like Us)
Character Age: 29
Job: CFUD Lifestyle Correspondent
Canon: Life as a successful journalist isn't easy for Iwaya Sumire. Being a tall, well-educated career woman gives the men in her life--co-workers and lovers alike--inferiority complexes, and women tend to be jealous of her success. After a breakup with her cheating boyfriend and a demotion at her job, she returns home one evening to find a box in the street. Inside that box is a bruised and bloody young man, whom she decides to bring into her home to clean up and feed. When she later asks the young man to leave, he decides he likes being there, and asks to stay. She eventually agrees, but on one condition: he'll become her pet, and have no basic human rights, all in exchange for food and board. He surprisingly agrees, and asks her to name him whatever she wants. She decides on "Momo", as he reminds her of the dog she had as a child. As time goes on, the human-pet relationship becomes strained, and Sumire struggles not to let Momo become more than just a pet . . .
Sumire tends to come off as the stoic, dedicated, hardworking type, and this is the face the majority sees. Though she tries to keep up a strong and capable front, in actuality she suffers from severe depression, anxiety, and loneliness, to the point where her private life is a complete mess and she's essentially a chain smoking wreck. She has trouble being honest with her feelings and admitting when there's a problem, and relies heavily on Momo as her emotional support--he is literally the only person she can be "herself" around, whether in happiness or sadness; someone who loves her and whom she can love unconditionally. Inwardly shy, awkward, and quite self-conscious (particularly about her height), she tends to feel out of her element in most social situations and in many cases will simply avoid going out if she can. With Momo by her side, she is far more relaxed; able to play videogames or watch pro wrestling, joke around, or simply spend the evening snuggling.
Note: She's being taken from the later volumes of the manga, where she has quit her job at the newspaper and is working freelance. In addition, her squishy, vulnerable side is kept well-hidden save for a small number of people, so she'll come off as mostly business.
Sample Entry:
Tell us about yourself in a few words.
My name is Iwaya Sumire. I graduated from Tokyo University with a degree in journalism, and I have been gainfully employed since graduation. I am currently working as a freelance journalist after having spent several years as both a correspondent and editor for a well-read newspaper in the External Affairs and Lifestyle departments. I live alone with a single pet, Momo, with whom I spend most of my free time.
Why are you joining our happy community?
As I have an expansive portfolio of well-received articles and speak fluent English, I was asked by my previous employer if I would be willing to spend some time on temporary assignment for a special Foreign Lifestyles section they plan to run. It is my intention to spend my time at CFUD studying the daily lives of the residents and compose several feature-length weekly articles.
What is your job here at CFUD? What do you think that means?
The official title I've been given is CFUD Lifestyle Correspondent. This entails investigating the customs and regular "day in the life" happenings of CFUD's residents. My aim is to give the readers a taste of something different, while at the same time displaying the similarities between cultures. I have heard that although daily life in CFUD is not the most eventful, there does appear to be a strange fixation with cephalopods . . .
Do you have a five year plan in mind?
I plan on going as far as journalism will take me, be it in Japan or abroad. I have taken particular interest in the performance arts, more specifically modern dance, and intend to eventually write reviews and interview performers from around the world. Though marriage in the future is a possibility, I do not plan on leaving my career behind to do so and, in that event, will balance both my work and home life as necessary.
If there was a good dog and a criminal both hanging from a cliff and you could only save one, which would you save and why?
I would save the dog. A pet is innocent and deserving of the care of its owner, regardless of its actions. He is someone that will love and follow a person anywhere, unconditionally; a constant, loyal presence that can be trusted without hesitation. He is a warm, faithful companion who can be counted on at any time, day or night, to provide comfort and affection. Even when he demands to be shampooed and leaves his things all over the apartment and refuses to get out of my bed when he's not allowed in there--wait, why can't I erase that?
A dog has little control over their actions, and can be trained not to repeat them. A criminal chose his or her method of personal conduct of their own accord, and there is no guarantee that they will not repeat their unlawful endeavors in the future.
Character: Munakata Reishi
Series: K
Character Age: 24
Job: Head of Camp's Police Force
Canon: During World War II, an experiment took place wherein it was discovered that humans could be imbued with powers. Superpowered humans were dubbed Kings, and they have the ability to take on clansmen and share their power with them. Munakata Reishi is the Blue King, who keeps watch over Shizume City by leading his government-sanctioned group, Scepter 4. His powers consist of an energy called blue aura, which is primarily used to create very sturdy force fields. HOMRA, the group led by the Red King, is the number one thorn in his side, but when one of HOMRA's members is mysteriously murdered, it's Munakata's job to find the murderer and stop HOMRA from going out of control.
As the head of a group that functions like a superpowered police force, Munakata is an efficient, competent leader. His number one concern is maintaining order, and fulfilling that goal overshadows his own personal feelings regardless of the situation. While Munakata is someone who will do what is right at any cost, he still comes across as enigmatic. He has a perfect poker face, a calm manner, and a polite way of speaking that makes it difficult to know what he's feeling, and that cover hardly ever wavers. He's been described as having a big heart, but most view him as cold, detached, and unfeeling.
Note: A Strain is a being that has inherent abilities unrelated to any of the Kings, which can include turning into an animal.
Sample Entry:
Tell us about yourself in a few words.
Munakata Reishi, the Fourth and Blue King, Captain of Scepter 4. That should be sufficient.
Why are you joining our happy community?
Simply put, there are people in this place who I still need to keep a watchful eye on. I've already sent one of my subordinates ahead to scope out the situation, but if HOMRA truly is in full force here, then he'll need some assistance. All the other captives count as civilians, and they don't need to be caught in their crossfire.
What do you expect from the campers here?
As previously stated, they're civilians, so my top priority would be keeping them safe. From what I've read about this place, it goes to great effort to do the exact opposite.
While I don't expect many to be of much interest, I'm not so foolish as to disregard them entirely. If there's anyone with inhuman powers causing trouble in this Camp, then I will deal with them accordingly. I don't intend to underestimate anyone.
What do you expect from the counselors?
I would like to say I expect competence, but that can be surprisingly hard to find. It's clear that there's no real sense of organization in this place, and most of the adults here aren't helping. Motivating them to carry out their jobs would be ideal, though that would be dependent on the job titles they've been given. From what I've heard, some of those titles are clearly meant as cheap jokes, though that's no excuse for the adults to behave irresponsibly.
If there was a good dog and a criminal both hanging from a cliff and you could only save one, which would you save and why?
Interesting, that you'd think I could only save one. My plan would be to create a net using my aura at the bottom of the cliff, in order to break their fall. After that, I'd deal with the criminal personally.
Admittedly, I'm curious to know how they ended up hanging from the edge in the first place. Doesn't it seem like there's more to this than meets the eye? Well, I could be complicating things.
As for the dog... provided it's not a Strain of some kind, it would be placed in a shelter.
What is your job here at CFUD? What do you think that means?
I only have one job, and I'm well aware of what that is. Seeing as how everyone in this Camp has been kidnapped and placed here by force, I expect there to be discontent, and that will no doubt lead to unnecessary acts of violence. You've named me head of the police force, and whether such an organization exists or not, I do plan to keep some semblance of order here.
I think I've answered enough of your questions now, so I'll be taking my leave. I need to get down to business.
Character: Sailor Aluminum Siren
Series: Sailor Moon: Sailor Stars
Character Age: looks about mid-to-late twenties
Job: Cuisine Lover
Canon: A Sailor-suited Pretty Soldier of Love and Justice: Sailor Moon! In the name of the moon, she will punish you! Tsukino Usagi has been righting wrongs and triumphing over evil since she was in Junior High. With a new year come a whole slew of new problems to deal with: new school, new powers, and a brand-new enemy. Strangely enough, though, these new enemies appear to be Sailor Soldiers as well.
Sailor Aluminum Siren is one of the Anima-mates. She's been called "slow" by the other characters, which is rather apt, as she can be rather dense, dim-witted, and ditsy. With her head up in the clouds, Siren'll take insults as compliments and thank someone or apologize for entirely the wrong reasons. She's always careful about being polite and ladylike, a point that often confuses allies and enemies alike. She seems to be perpetually hungry, often enjoying a snack whilst in the middle of an attack. For all that Siren is a scatterbrain, though, she's can be very determined and relentless when she has a goal.
Sample Entry:
Tell us about yourself in a few words.
Oh my, how kind of you to ask. So few people are this polite nowadays, you know, it's terribly sad. Why, my mother always said that to be a good girl, one must always properly introduce herself when meeting someone new. Isn't that nice?
Please, take my card. My name is Reiko, Aya Reiko, and it's absolutely wonderful to make your acquaintance.
Why are you joining our happy community?
I was asked to, of course, and it seemed so interesting I simply couldn't say no. Especially because it looks like you have such funny names for food here! I couldn't find anything about what they're made up of, so I do hope to be able to try it all at some time. Oh, especially that Tuesday soup. Could I get it any day? Or is it really just Tuesday? That does seem to be the most popular of this place's unique cuisine.
What do you expect from the campers here?
I don't know what to expect, really. I'm afraid I've never been to a summer camp before, I do hope that won't be a problem. But I'm hoping to meet some brightly shining stars here! In a place that has so many people from so many different places, there must be a few.
Do you think you are good in a crisis? Why?
If I absolutely had to say, I suppose I could say so. My partner often scolds me, but that's just her way of showing how she cares. Really though, it's quite a strange question to ask, don't you think? I was under the impression that summer camps were all about roasting marshmallows and pizza and barbeques.
What if the crisis involved the end of the world? Please explain.
Goodness! Is that very likely to happen soon?
Do you consider yourself squeamish? Please provide an example.
Mmm... I suppose I'm not. I don't think I ever thought about that before.
Although, this one time, I was really craving some fried chicken. It had been so long since lunch, after all, and it just popped into my head! The good kind, with the lightly battered meat and the lovely golden-crunch, and there simply wasn't a store that sold it around. There were some chickens though, all plump and lovely, so I took one and, well...
Oh, it's not a very proper thing to talk about in polite company, I know, but it made such a wonderful supper that night. I could show you, if you'd like!
Do you have a five year plan in mind?
Ah... Instead of five years, can't we talk about five minutes from now? Talking about the chicken has made me so hungry, I'd really rather just stop answering questions so I can go make something to eat, if you don't mind. I think I'm in the mood for a nice, crispy pizza, with shrimp and tuna and, oh! Mayonnaise, of course...
Character: Sailor Lead Crow
Series: Sailor Moon: Sailor Stars
Character Age: Late twenties
Job: Rivalry Expert
Canon: Fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by daylight, her name is Sailor Moon, guardian of love and justice on Earth. High school girl Tsukino Usagi is a Sailor Warrior, protecting the planet from various evil threats. However, with the appearance of the musical idols Starlights and an enemy who seem to be Sailor Warriors themselves, forcing Usagi to re-evaluate whom she is allowed to trust.
Sailor Lead Crow is one of the Anima-mates and Sailor Moon's enemy. Cunning and determined, Lead Crow is resolute in her mission to help Sailor Galaxia destroy the universe. While she may seem cool and collected, she has no patience for laziness and procrastination, often erupting into an enormous rage. Especially when it comes to her rival, Sailor Aluminum Siren. Passionate about her rivalry!! and competition!! Sailor Lead Crow often gets carried away. Despite her seemingly intolerant and no-nonsense attitude, Sailor Lead Crow genuinely cares for her rival and would never put her in harm's way. After all, a decent rival is hard to find these days.
Note - her signature weapon is a whip.
Sample Entry:
Tell us about yourself in a few words.
Oh, honestly, how stupid do you think I am? As if I would tell a complete stranger my personal details! Hmph, what a moron. You can call me Karasuma. Any attempts to find out anything else will result in a sound beating. I'm extremely competent with a whip.
What's with all the suspicious looks? Whip-fighting is a legitimate martial art!
Why are you joining our happy community?
I've been hired to teach these young people the merits of having an arduous rivalry. I can assure you, it is quite worthwhile to have a rival of your own. Without a rival, you're without your other half! Daily life becomes dull and tedious without the flames of passion and spirit to ignite your feelings! Of course, don't get too carried away and end up picking some random idiot to be your one true rival. Believe me, it never ends well ... for them.
Do you think you are good in a crisis? Why?
I am certainly one of the most useful people in a crisis because unlike some people, I am able to comprehend the dangers in the world. Such as terrorists! Fires! Vicious canines! Angry birds! Truly this is a world where anything is possible. Thankfully I am aware of all the threats posed to me. Unfortunately, I only have time to take care of myself, therefore during a crisis, you're on your own.
What if the crisis involved the end of the world? Please explain.
Why should the end of the world concern me? I already said I only look out for myself!
Have you committed any crimes you were or should have been convicted from?
How rude! First you ask for my personal details, then you grill me over such ridiculous questions! If I have committed any crime, I assure you, you would not be able to notice at all! Why, I could ... steal the questions from this survey from you right now and you wouldn't even notice the difference!
Are you lying on your previous answer?
Now you're just being insulting. For that, I refuse to say anything more on the subject!
If you could get away with committing one crime and suffer absolutely no consequences, what would you do and why?
Hm. If I could get away with one crime without any consequences, I wouldn't say no to a little murder. After all, I don't take kindly to failure and I have a score to settle with people who don't understand the sanctity of rivalry.
What is your job here at CFUD? What do you think that means?
As I said earlier, my job is to teach the campers the importance of rivalry. For me, it is ... one of the most important things in my life. It's almost like a friendship. Without a rival, your life is meaningless. So! I, Karasuma, will prove to camp the meaning of having an intense relationship with your rival!
... No, not like that! Is nothing sacred around here?!
. . . which is to say! We got in quite a number of apps today, which is awesome. That also means that this batch is a big one! Don't feel rushed to read all of them at once since the batch will be open for quite a bit, but please vote.

Canon: If you found out that you had reality warping powers after you accidentally gave a bully an electric shock, would you:
a) join a superhero team initially dedicated to stopping a time travelling villain, while calling yourself ‘Asgardian’;
b) be utterly convinced that the lady that awoke your powers is actually your preincarnation’s mother;
c) adopt the codename ‘Wiccan’ despite being a gay Jewish fanboy whose closest experience with the faith is watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer;
d) quit being a superhero after your changeling fantasy storyline got two team members killed;
e) do all of the above.

In or out?

Mahiro apper here!
(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 05:25 am (UTC)(link)The "I am proud" etc. thing is actually a quote from Hamlet. He's self-aware of how he truly is, and since the quote was relevant to him, he used it. But, basically, Mahiro is one of the characters in the series who references Shakespeare often, especially if it applies to him or the situation he's in. I hope this answers your concern!

WITH THAT SAID, I'm afraid that Yoshino was an out for me-- the app was a lot of situational setup, referencing both canon and what's happened to him so far in camp, and that could have worked if I'd gotten more of a feel for his opinions about it! But I'm afraid I really didn't.
Other outs:
Billy The setup for your survey really confused me-- is he waking up in a strange new place, does he know this is zombie summer camp, or is he on his way to a con? I know that this may seem like a petty reason to vote out, but without an understanding of what situation the character thinks he's in I found it really difficult to gauge if his responses made sense for the character you described in your canon.
Aluminum Siren, I really didn't get ditzy from your sample, and went with out since you'd pushed that as the underlying characteristic behind her polite and wandering voice.
In other news, kiiiiiing. I guess the vacation is over :|

I'm abstaining on Mahiro because I'm seriously wibbling. I feel like your app is extremely repetitive, and that there was a lot more you could have done to really make his voice shine. When I DO see his voice, though, it's great, so. Yeah. I think I'm sitting this one out because I'm really torn.

Re: Yoshino apper
(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Yoshino apper
I feel like the major problems I had with this app are ones that Nezumi covered already. There was a lot of set up with very little of Yoshino's actual reactions. I also think that the canon section could have been tightened up a lot to really highlight who Yoshino is what his personality is like. As the app stands right now, I felt like it was very much just. Scratching the surface. The premise didn't really stand out, and nothing about Yoshino's voice really made me go "YES this is who he is."
