Character: Lara Croft
Series: Tomb Raider (2013)
Character Age: early twenties
Job: Intro to Action Archaeology Instructor
Canon: When a ragtag group looking to film a Discovery Channel type reality show set off in search of an ancient lost Japanese kingdom, what they don’t count on is being shipwrecked by an unnatural storm on an island they cannot escape, fighting off wolves, cultists, and even worse things in dilapidated World War II bunkers and the remains of several thousand years’ worth of other ruins and wrecked ships and such. It’s all quite the harrowing experience, especially for rookie archaeologist Lara Croft.

Though she grew up in the life, finding her first artifact at the age of five and dooming herself to loving that feeling for the rest of all time, this is Lara’s first true adventure, and obviously it’s one she’ll never forget, even if there are parts of it she wishes she could. Like all the stabbings and shootings and beatings and every other worst thing you can think of that happen to her, for instance! Or, you know, maybe the hundreds of crazy mofos she’s forced to murder in the face. That’ll definitely mess with your head, especially if you’ve mostly been a bookwormish academy student up until now. Fortunately, like her very Indiana Jones-esque papa, Lara is a born survivor. Whip-smart and resourceful, she’ll do whatever it takes to survive and make sure everyone who isn’t a murderous psycho does as well, even if what it takes turns out to be very, very unpleasant. Though her inexperience leads her to doubt herself at times, Lara is passionate and ballsy, with very sharp instincts and a thirst for knowledge and discovery, and when she feels strongly about something, she can be just as determined outside of life-or-death situations as in them. She does seem to have a good dose of that incurably serious person-of-logic aura about her even at the best of times (and in spite of recent rethinking of her skeptical scientist stance), but she’s also kind and caring and actually does have a sense of humor, if perhaps a fairly dry one. Supposedly she even knows how to have fun, but that side of her doesn’t get a lot of opportunity to shine just now, because this is a very different Lara from any we’ve seen before. Unsure, frightened, and very young, but slowly tempered by events to come into her own as an archaeologist, hero, and parkour master.

Sample Post:

Tell us about yourself in a few words.
A few things about myself? Sure. So, as you know, my name is Lara Croft. I’m not exactly a seasoned professional, and you won’t find that name in any articles on archaeological discoveries, except perhaps as an assistant or researcher. But I can assure you I know what I’m talking about when it comes to the topic. Certainly enough to teach a basic course at a summer camp. I’ve been fascinated by it since I was a child, and it’s even the subject I ended up studying in university. This work is my life, basically. Which sounds a little sad when I say it aloud, doesn’t it? Oh well.

So why are you joining our happy community?
Let’s just say that while I love fieldwork, my last job was a bit... hectic, and a friend convinced me to try doing something a little less exciting, at least until I’m finished recovering. Though I suppose if many of the students I’m to be working with here are small children, I can’t expect my days to be too stress-free, can I?

...that was a joke.

And what exactly is it that makes you a valuable asset to this camp?
Well, like I said before, I may not have much formal experience, but I’ve been to more archaeological sites than most people who’ve been working in the field for decades, and I remember what it’s like to be a child first learning to love this work and starting to want to learn more about it. I’d like to believe that I can use that knowledge to help my students do the same, or at the very least stay awake through my class.

Also, I’ve heard that there’s an intricate cave system here that may have once been occupied. If it can be arranged, I’d like to do some exploring in there myself sometime and use those experiences, and what they tell me about the local history, in my lessons. I have a feeling it could help.

Do you consider yourself squeamish? Please provide an example.
No, I wouldn’t say so. Someone in my line of work can end up dealing with their fair share of unpleasant environments and materials, including human remains. Some more than others, of course... Sorry, um, personally I’ve never had any issues. And in my opinion at least, when you can handle the unearthing of old burials with both your wits and your stomach contents still under control, you can handle most anything. Why do you ask though? Is this really going to be relevant to the job?

Can you perform a flawless headshot? If not, and if your life depended on it, how many hours a week would you be willing to spend on the shooting range?
Excuse me? Since when is marksmanship a skill you need to know about for filling a teaching position? And why would you ask about life-threatening danger or shooting people in the head?! Just what sort of operation are you running around here?

What do you think your job is here at CFUD?
I’m the instructor for an introductory archaeology course, which means I’ll be teaching students about the basics of archaeological theory and history, not taking them all spelunking for tombs to defile under the campgrounds or shooting anyone’s head off!

But what does your paperwork actually say your job is?
My paperwork? Obviously it says... Oh, hell. “Action Archaeology?” What does that even mean? Don’t tell me there’s something in those caves I’ll have to fight my way through if I want a look at anything of historical value. And you expect me to bring a class full of defenseless students down there with me to show them the ropes? I’d like to see you try and make me.

...God, is it really one hour in and I’ve already located some deadly catacombs, uncovered a plot to endanger children’s lives, and goaded the mad men in charge of it all into a fight? Good. This is just great. This quiet recovery is off to an excellent start.

Character: Philip
Series: Kamen Rider W
Character Age: 20-21
Canon:
Fuuto is a tough city, but not as tough as the people who love and protect it, which in this case doesn’t include the police. No, it takes a hard-boiled Kamen Rider to keep the city and its people safe, and in order to make one truly hard-boiled Kamen Rider you need two half-boiled Kamen Riders. Enter W, the combination of dedicated detective Shoutarou and his intelligent but socially stunted partner Philip. Together they form a hero fit to fight crime and injustice even when one of them has a secret that threatens to destroy him and the city he fights for.

Philip is intelligent and focused, but more importantly he’s very well read. It helps that he has access to the world’s internal library where the right keywords will pull up information on anything and everything you could possibly want to know. Occasionally Philip can get wrapped up in his research and reading to the point where he absolutely obsesses on a topic and can’t do unrelated to it. He is somewhat cold, although he develops a connection to friends and family that he would defend with everything he has. He is more logical and level headed than his partner and cares a great deal less for strangers. Unless, of course, those strangers happened to have an interesting dilemma. Philip is always on the quest to know more.

Tell us about yourself in a few words.
Only a few words? Do they have to form a sentence or can it just be freeform? You weren’t specific, so I suppose that means I have to choose.

My name is Philip and I am a private detective in Futo city along with my partner Shoutarou and our friends Akiko and Terui. I don’t have any family to speak of. My hobbies include reading and listening to the radio. If I had to describe myself in a word I would say: intelligent.

Why are you joining our happy community?
I was researching the feasibility of interdimensional travel and it brought me to information about something called CFUD. But I couldn’t read the book about CFUD, it was scrambled and locked in a way I’ve never seen. I eventually found a way to connect to the world of CFUD, but it required joining in order to complete the connection. Really, I just need a slightly stronger link, even 70% would be enough.

If there was a good dog and a criminal both hanging from a cliff and you could only save one, which would you save and why?
Assuming this is not something that will actually happen to me while in your camp, I would have to answer that I would save the criminal. It would be a difficult choice, but a human life is worth more risks than a dog’s life, based on the number of people who risk themselves to save other people versus those who risk themselves to save animals.

Any final thoughts?
You want to know my final thoughts? I think using questions like this to asses potential candidates is a curious one. And worth looking into. Are you trying to get a baseline psychological evaluation from them? And if so is it based on the work of any respected doctors or do you have your own guidelines? I suppose if I knew the reasoning behind...

Excuse me, I really should read up on this. But stay right there, I will have many more questions when I’m done.

Character: Hidari Shoutarou
Series: Kamen Rider W
Age: Mid 20s
Job: Hat Rack
Canon: In the city of Fuuto, a sinister group has taken over and is causing trouble. Gaia Memories, flashdrive-like devices filled with all of the Earth's memories on any certain subject, are being distributed to Fuuto's citizens for evil intent. When these Memories are inserted into their owner, that person is transformed into a monster! Lucky that Kamen Rider W, the mysterious hero of the city, is capable of performing a "Memory Break" to undo the poison of the device and get the person back into the gentle embrace of society.

Hidari Shoutarou would love for everyone to believe that he is the cool, hard-boiled, film noir style detective he dresses like. In reality, he is almost anything but — though, okay, the detective part still stands, as does his ever-present fedora. Inevitably, every time he tries to act the part of the suave, manly detective, he ruins his own image with shouting and flailing, which has earned him the unfortunate nickname of "half-boiled;" When you get down to it, he's a loud, dramatic, heart on his sleeve, short-tempered kind of guy who has been known to overreact. But, you know, that's just the sort of man that Fuuto needs.

Survey:

Tell us about yourself in a few words.

My name is Hidari Shoutarou, and I'm a detective. That's all. I don't need to give any more introduction than that. A man's mysterious side is what draws people to him, and those intent to learn his secrets are always disappointed. Truly, this is a hard-boiled scenario... Which is why it's just perfect for a man like me.

Why are you joining our happy community?
When a woman calls a private eye in the middle of the night crying, with a story about hundreds people who have been disappearing, what's to be done but accept the case? Her missing fiancé, she says, is just one of the hundreds in a serial missing persons case even the police won't touch. They need a location, and I was hired to find it. From the sounds of it, that last guy she sent out — Waldo somebody, he didn't get far and hasn't turned up since. That Miss Elizabeth of yours was pretty distraught by the whole thing. In the end, I guess I couldn't say no to the face of a lovely woman in need.

The trail led to Louisiana. There were definite traces of the missing people through to the midwest before going cold again. Damn, that was frustrating! Cows aren't good for anything, especially witness statements. Maybe that one that tried to eat my hat is a burger now ... She'll be missed. But the point is, even though it took some doing, I got here just like the client requested. All that's left is do is send out the coordinates and wait for backup.

If there was a good dog and a criminal both hanging from a cliff and you could only save one, which would you save and why?
Ah, geez! How does that even work? Dogs can't just hang, which means somebody had to put him there. Even if it was an accident, someone else is still at fault. Right. Which means he's completely innocent in all of this and doesn't deserve to suffer. But the criminal won't have a chance to repent for his actions if no one brings him up. And who says I can't save them both? The real criminal in this case is whoever left them to die and whoever is trying to leave them there. In that case, that person better start counting up his sins before I find him.

What is your job here at CFUD? What do you think that means?
... Job? Oh! Right, the cover story for the infiltration. Sorry, I'm getting to that right now. Let's see what the client has in mind...

What the hell is this?! H-hat rack?! Are you out of your minds?! Don't you know how important a hat is to a man? You can't just trivialize that! This whole thing is a joke! Hat rack?! Listen up, I'm a detective, not some piece of furniture you throw up on the wall and forget about until it breaks. I'll show you who's a hat rack.

Could you please estimate the number of hats you currently own?
Mine? Let's see, it's about half a dozen... — Ahhhh! You're basing this job on my outfit?! That's so stupid! I want out! I refuse!

Miss Elizabeth, I regret to inform you that our contract is null and void, and if you put even one more party hat on top of the six you've already put on top of this fedora, well. Things might get a little hairy around here.

Character: Felix Gaeta
Series: Battlestar Galactica (2004)
Character Age: 30
Job: Tactical Advisor

Canon: Battlestar Galactica is the story of humanity’s search for a new home. Not because of global warming or a natural catastrophe, though. No, it’s the story of humanity’s search for a new home after their old home was nuked by robots they built, who hold a grudge. But this devastation is only the beginning of the hardships in store for the 50,000 humans who managed to escape. Of course, there’s the Cylons – who look JUST LIKE US, are pretty much immortal, and really want to finish the job they started – but there’s also fuel shortages, food shortages, terrorist vice presidents, incompetent scientists-turned-presidents, and four whole years of living inside floating metal boxes. Although it isn’t all gloom and doom, life is pretty much one catastrophe after another for the men and women of the Battlestar Galactica and the civilians under their protection.

No one knows this lesson better than one Lieutenant Felix Gaeta. He starts out a truly nice guy, a little awkward but still sociable. He is an intelligent, polite, authority-respecting idealist who believes in doing the right thing, so much so that he trusts the people around him to do the same. But they don’t. By the time his story runs its course, Felix gets betrayed by the three people he most trusted (and a fourth person he probably shouldn’t have trusted but did anyway, having already been betrayed by the first three). That, and a partially amputated leg makes him a little more grumpy, argumentative, and less respectful than he might otherwise be. But deep down, he’s still the guy that everybody likes, and the one who trusts. Too much.
Note: Felix is being taken from after the events of The Oath/Blood on the Scales.

Sample Entry:

Tell us about yourself in a few words.
Uh...Sure. My name is Felix Gaeta, and I'm...no. Frak. Was. I was an officer on the Battlestar Galactica. I was a survivor of the attacks on the Colonies. I'm not sure what I am now.

Why are you joining our happy community?
I think I must have missed the part where I was given a choice. Because you need me, I'm assuming, though I’m not exactly sure what kind of summer camp needs a tactical advisor. There’s the obvious exception of military training camps, but this really doesn’t look like one. That being said, your archery range looks a little bit weird. I get that they’re kind of a camp staple, but are those bullet holes? What are you teaching these kids?

Do you think you are good in a crisis? Why?
At this point, I've had a lot of practice, so I'd say that I am. I mean, it's not like you go into the Fleet expecting a stress-free environment anyway, but when you're in a war, you get used to functioning under extreme pressure. I'm not claiming I've seen it all, but I've come pretty close.

What if the crisis involved the end of the world? Please explain.
Does the nuking of your entire civilization count? Um, I'm not entirely clear on where this line of questioning is going. When you asked about crises, I figured you meant a kid getting lost in the woods. That’s normal. The end of the world isn’t. But, yeah, I’ve had some practice with that too. Comes with being chased throughout the galaxy by homicidal robots.

Have you committed any crimes you were or should have been convicted from?
That's...a valid question, I suppose. I did try to stab the former president, but he survived, and I was thrown in the brig for a few days. Then there was the mutiny that I organized on Galactica. Not technically against any civilian laws, but it did...get out of hand. More people got hurt than they should have. That sounds pretty terrible when you put them together, but you try being on the run from the Cylons and see if things don't go all to hell. Anyway, that last one shouldn't matter here. It was a question of bad leadership. It looks like this place could use a slightly defter hand – some of your campers don’t seem…healthy, you should probably look into that – but nothing worth overthrowing the Director for.

Do you have any deep personal traumas you might inexplicably be compelled to share in this questionnaire? Please describe.
What? Seriously? The previous question, I understand. It…it’s not a comfortable question, but if you’re hiring me then I guess you should know. But why the frak would you need to know this? No. I have nothing I feel “compelled” to share. Can we move on?

Are you lying on your previous answer?
So that's a no. Refusing to answer isn't the same as lying, and I'm not going to answer. Next question.

Do you find these questions increasingly unnerving? Why/Why not?
I'm starting to think that's the point, which is kind of suspicious. Is this really a summer camp?

Lara, Shoutarou, and Felix are in! I abstained on Philip because the app seemed awfully short for me and I couldn't really get a feel on the voice from what was there. Possibly because it's late here.
