Character: Colette Brunel
Series: Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
Character Age: 18

Canon: The world of Sylvarant is slowly dying and its only hope of regeneration is the Chosen, a person who can both restore mana to the world and defeat the Desians, a group of half-elven terrorists intent on experimenting and/or killing every human they meet. By transforming into an angel, the Chosen can awaken the Goddess Martel and bring peace to the persecuted humans of Sylvarant. Unfortunately for the protagonists, all of that is a lie told to them by their world’s religious figures. As the truth is slowly revealed, the story shifts from saving the world to asking questions of the protagonists about the meaning of birth, genocide and prejudice. They also have to go around naming every dog in the world because this is important! ... to Colette, anyway.

Colette Brunel is the Chosen, and you couldn’t ask for a more selfless girl. Colette’s sweet-tempered, altruistic and just gosh-darned nice personality does, however, come at a cost: she was born to die, knows it and that people died because she didn’t, and believes that her feelings and desires are less important than everyone else’s on the planet. She’s getting better about this. In everyday conversation, Colette comes across as spacey and prone to bizarre logical progressions, thinking, among other things, calling someone a “stick in the mud” means that they’re in need of a bath, or that the world is full of ninja in boxes collecting corporate secrets. She also has the uncanny ability to solve puzzles by tripping over and smashing them with her face. The two may be related.

Tell us about yourself in a few words.
Right! Hello, my name is Colette Brunel and I’m eighteen years old. I’m from a place called Iselia, my favorite food is fruit and I think bell peppers are yucky. Everyone says I should be called “klutzy Colette”, but though they sound the same they aren’t spelled the same at all. I wonder … maybe they’re telling me that I’ve been spelling my name wrong and it should be Kolette! They’re so smart! I would never have known without them telling me.

Why are you joining our happy community?
That ... was a bit of an accident. You see, I was exploring these ruins for monsters, when I found this button. I wasn’t going to press the button but then I tripped, and all the ruins fell down. This happens a lot around me. I wonder why?

Anyway, I fell into a hole and at the bottom of the hole there was a very sick man who could only say two things: no, and brains. I tried to help him, but he just kept saying no and brains as he pushed me away. He looked both really sad and really hungry. I went looking for a healer to help him and that’s how I ended up here. I hope he’ll be all right while I answer this test.

Have you committed any crimes unrelated to what you just said you’d do to fruit that you were or should have been convicted from?
Yes, I have. A lot of people died when I turned away from my focus as the Chosen. I know that I can’t make it so that they never died. That’s impossible, I know that you mustn’t try to revive the dead. All I can do is to live my life and try to make the world a better place for the people in it.

If there was a good dog and a criminal both hanging from a cliff and you could only save one, which would you save and why?
I know the answer to this one! First I would fly up and tell the person that I would rescue them in a minute, while rescuing the doggie. This is because doggies can understand it when you talk to them, but they’re not good at time. Then, after I put the doggie on the ground I would fly up and rescue the person and on the way down ask if we can be friends. Just because they’re a criminal doesn’t make them a bad person. They could have been in the wrong place at the wrong time, or victims of injustice! They might have needed someone to point dramatically and yell “Objection!” at the right time to save them from a prison sentence, but he might not have been available. He might have been distracted right at a critical moment by a key piece of evidence going missing and he has to find who did it, wearing a cape and mask to hide his identity! Then once he finds out who did it he has to sneak all the way back out using cardboard boxes to hide when guards see him, like all good spies do and ... wait, what was the question again?

Character: Sherlock Holmes
Series: Elementary
Character Age: ~40
Job: Consulting Detective

Canon: Since Sherlock Holmes’ introduction in the late nineteenth century, his story has received numerous adaptations. The most recent one takes place in New York City with Holmes working with the New York Police Department as an arrogant and abrasive consulting detective. At his side is the trusty Dr. Joan Watson who begins as his sober companion to help him in his final stages of recovery from his heroin addiction and eventually becomes his partner and apprentice. Sherlock claims he’s better and sharper with Watson at his side, and she helps him come to grips with his both his humanity and dealing with others.

But that doesn’t mean Sherlock is a shining beacon of humility. Sherlock is still eccentric, rude, tactless, and at times, needlessly critical. His excessive intelligence, which he never fails to remind others about, does not make up for his lack of social skills. In fact, he can be downright annoying to deal with as he needles someone and never relents. All the same, Sherlock is dedicated to his job, having spent his life trying to become as informed as possible in order to perform adequately. His hard work has made him indispensable on a case, even if he is not the easiest to work with. After all, working with someone who has the utmost confidence in his own abilities can become grating, but he does truly want to help people. He finds all types of criminals despicable, and seeing people in pain does drive him to help. Even if he’s difficult, his stubborn, unrelenting approach to his job means he’ll never give up until any case is solved. His recent improvements in character have only helped, as he can keep himself in check due to the assistance and advice from Watson.

Tell us about yourself in a few words.

My name is Sherlock Holmes. I am a consulting detective for the NYPD. This is rather far from New York City, and despite all appearances and assumptions by some of the individuals here, this is not my homeland, either—though I do admire the attempt to give that impression.

I suppose I’m meant to say a few more words here. Ah, you’ve heard of my reputation. Right. Thank you. I’m quite good at my job. Let’s skip all that, shall we? This is a rather effective kidnapping operation, and I intend to get down to the bottom of it. In fact, I thank you for having the gall to welcome me here. That should make things truly interesting.

Why are you joining our happy community?

I believe I’ve already covered that. This is a kidnapping operation. Please continue.

Actually, I have a better idea. I will give you some questions with answers, and hopefully, you will find them satisfying.

What do you expect from your camp experience? Why do you think Director Elizabeth Sayre, if it is truly Director Sayre still in charge, has been effective in kidnapping superpowered individuals for the past eight years?

Well, to begin, she clearly has the technology or, dare I say, magic to succeed. The real question is in how she keeps everyone in line. The rate of destruction here is surprisingly low considering the individuals trapped. I even had a look at the records available in your library before you tracked me down. The only widespread destruction occurred at the hand of a dinosaur wearing lingerie and a hat two years ago, which, of course, was the fault of someone who was not kidnapped to this location.

It’s peculiar.

I could walk you through all manners of deductions, but simply put, it’s Stockholm Syndrome—or something like it. That explains the docility and the understanding that whatever these people do, it will be a waste of their time. Furthermore, it explains their willingness to band together to protect the camp. It’s fascinating. They don’t like it at all, and yet, they protect it.

What if the crisis involved the end of the world? Please explain. Do you intend to pose a threat to Director Sayre’s operation, especially since she has already solved the mystery of her dead fiancé?

Yes.

As for the latter part of that clause, I admit that I’m surprised that she has not posed a better reason for keeping us here. Then again, I am starting to think that her absence has another explanation.

What if, in order to resolve the problems with the intergalactic bridge, someone else stepped in and removed the control from her hands? It would be quite the unique approach. It doesn’t explain why the kidnapping has continued, but perhaps they admired Sayre’s approach to things. It would explain the anomalies about this location. The previous two were clearly located in the United States of America. This is not. In fact, despite all of my attempts, I have not managed to identify it.

Though I am not sure if it will be a relief to hear that camp is no longer under the charge of a desperately crazy woman who cannot overcome her falsified grief. I imagine not.

Would you be able to dispose of the flesh of the undead? How?

I will answer this one. I refuse to acknowledge this as a question regarding the world outside.

If it is a zombie, burn it.

If it is someone or something else, wait for it to reanimate. If you are the cause for this death, I suggest you get away quickly and hope they are not filled with vengeance.

What is your job here at CFUD? What do you think that means?

I am a consulting detective, but as far as I can see, I will not be consulting with anyone. At least in a way that I will find illuminating or, if not illuminating, stimulating.

Still, I suspect I should end your survey in a way that will not be discomfiting for whoever does bother to come across it later. Here goes.

As a consulting detective, I want to help solve the mystery of Camp Fuck You Die. Therefore, I will begin with the mysterious creature in the lake. After all, nothing can truly go wrong with that.

Sherlock in and Colette out. Colette, I feel like you jumped right over bizarre logical progressions and on into crazy meta, which made it hard for me to focus on her as a character.
