Character: Irene Adler
Series: Elementary
Character Age: early 30s
Job: Art Instructor
Canon (Beware of falling spoilers!): A modern retelling of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Elementary changes the setting to 21st century New York City, where the consulting detective works with the NYPD to solve seemingly impossible crimes. Holmes is now a recovering addict, and Joan Watson is his sober companion turned partner and apprentice, helping Holmes solve crimes and move past the events that led him down the road of addiction-- the largest being the apparent death of his lover Irene Adler.

Irene was an art restorer who captivated Sherlock with her brilliant intellect, observational skills, and love for the unique and exciting. Apparently murdered after Sherlock got too close to the criminal mastermind Moriarty, Irene was actually secretly kidnapped and held against her will by Moriarty’s agents until Sherlock was able to find out the truth and track her down. Though she’s still recovering from her ordeal, Irene remains the strong, stubborn woman she was when she and Sherlock met. While she has more social skills than Sherlock, Irene nevertheless has the tendency to speak bluntly when it suits her, and occasionally follows her own moral code when it comes to switching out famous paintings with her forgeries in order to keep the originals safe from overzealous conservation efforts. It’s all for the sake of preserving the art, of course.

Also, (even more spoilers!) Irene is actually Moriarty! Cold, professional, and an amazing actress, she runs a billion dollar criminal empire with squads of assassins and thugs at her beck and call. To her, people are merely games to be manipulated and beaten.

Sample Entry:

Tell us about yourself in a few words.
Hi. My name’s Irene-- Irene Adler. According to the paperwork so generously provided, I’ll be serving as your art instructor for... well, however long we’ll be together, as vague as that is. My focus will be on art appreciation and therapeutic techniques, which means I won’t be teaching you how to glue sticks together or do watercolors of happy tentacles. That’s something you’ll have to do in your own time, unless you think exploring those particular artistic avenues will help you get through your trauma. You also shouldn’t worry about sitting through hours of slides or reading assignments. My aim is to help your inner turmoil, not encourage it.

Why are you joining our happy community?
Because it would take a stronger person that I am to say no to a position as interesting as this. I needed some time away from where I was, and this was a perfect opportunity to explore a place like no other and help children and teens get through the same struggles I’ve had to face. You see, I know what it’s like to be taken somewhere against your will, to have your mind played with for years. Art helped me hold on to my identity. Maybe it can help some campers here do the same.

What do you expect from the campers here?
More than I expect from the questions on this survey. Wastelands and impassable mountains surround a camp full of impossible creatures, and you’re asking me to tell you about my motivations for coming here? Disappointing. I expect my campers, damaged as they may be, will be much more creative than whoever wrote this. I also expect them to not understand the significance of ultramarine blue and to care much more about adding glitter to their projects than anything else, but these are forgivable offenses.

Would you be able to dispose of the flesh of the undead? How?
Oh, now we’re being imaginative, are we? Kind of a poor attempt. But still, an attempt. Kudos. I guess my answer is yes, though it’s not a thing I know much about. Depending on the circumstances, I could be spending hours with a vat of chemicals and some crime procedurals. Or I’d sweep it up and toss it in the trash. One of those two.

Do you find these questions increasingly unnerving? Why/Why not?
On the contrary, I find it comforting. It’s about time this survey stopped pretending to be for normal summer camp. It would be exhausting and a waste of time if we had to go about our stays as if everything is normal. That’s not going to help anyone.

What do you expect from your camp stay?
You know, I really think our time together will be unique, to say the least. I’m looking forward to it quite a bit.
