Character: He Ting Yu
Series: Alice in Wonder City
Character Age: ~27
Job: Zombie Orchestra Concertmaster
Canon: One afternoon in Taipei, a talented young violinist with a dream meets the love of his life: a visiting Japanese woman called Alice. Following a short fling, she disappears without a word. A year later, the heartbroken Chen Hai Jie still searches for Alice, and when he is offered his dream chance to audition for the world-renowned Katagalan Symphony Orchestra, he takes it; believing that wherever Alice is, she will hear his violin and understand his feelings. She returns one day a changed woman with a new name, Itou Seiko; someone who is searching only for her mother and claiming she has never met Hai Jie before. Undeterred and with the help of friends and coworkers, Hai Jie is able to come to terms with the concepts of love and loss, while making beautiful music in the process.
Ting Yu is Katagalan's founder and concertmaster; a world-class violinist who has spent his entire life studying music. In the public eye, he's mostly everything a star should be: handsome, dedicated to his work, and extraordinarily talented . . . though with little modesty, and sometimes with a "fuck you all" attitude; you won't find him sugarcoating anything. Those who work with him would see him as brilliant, impulsive and a little bit lazy, but brash and arrogant; a self-important person who cares only about himself and his music--the type of person who would value the safety of his violin over that of another human being. He is all of those things, but to know him well is to know him as a depressed alcoholic with an addiction to sleeping pills and deep-rooted mommy issues. He is extremely controlling and strives for absolute perfection in every aspect of his life to the point of overworking himself, all while ignoring (or because of) his own personal demons. He has trouble coming to terms with his own feelings, but once he does, he's the type to see things through, for better or for worse.
Note: Hai Ou is the name of his preferred violin, which was stolen in canon.
Sample Entry:
Tell us about yourself in a few words.
I'm He Ting Yu, Katagalan's founder and apparently the only person who will be able to whip your underperforming orchestra into shape. My preferred instruments are violin and piano. Surely you've heard of me; I'm a household name and anyone who's anyone can speak of my accomplishments. For the rest, go to a bookstore and find a biography. I'm not here to talk about me.
Why are you joining our happy community?
I received an anonymous letter stating someone in this shitty establishment had their grubby hands on my Hai Ou. Some sort of blackmail bullshit about passing on some of my knowledge to your Zombies--what the fuck kind of mascot is that?--in exchange for my violin. I may have already received the insurance money, but Hai Ou is mine; it's an extension of myself. It will never sound as good for someone else.
Why are you a valuable asset to this camp?
Isn't it obvious? Against my better judgement, I'm here to teach, and to lead. And when I'm finished, your orchestra's name will be known around the world. But let's get this straight: if your people aren't willing to work themselves into the ground in order to better themselves, I'm leaving. It's not worth my time or energy to teach a bunch of halfassed, halfhearted losers. There is no "try". There is only "do", or get out and make way for someone who can handle the heat.
What do you expect from the counselors?
I expect them to perform their duties to utmost perfection. Ideally they'll be published artists themselves, with a strong passion for music and--what is this? "Investigatory Beekeeper"? "Ninja Delivery Girl"? What the hell kind of jobs are those? Hey, I'm talking to you! What's the meaning of this! Are you kidding me? Are those actual, real--
You know what, nevermind. You people clearly have no idea what you're doing here, if you're letting people fool around like that. Let's just move on.
What do you expect from the campers?
A true musician never wavers. Their feelings are felt through their music; the way they work with their instruments. I expect them to have the motivation and drive to stand at the top. I won't accept anything less than one hundred and ten percent in effort. Again, there is no "try", there is only "do". Additionally, I won't bother with beginners. I don't have time or care to start from scratch. They're here to learn to be the best of the best, not fool around and blow off practice to have fun or whatever kids do.
In the interest of protecting our counselors' mental well-being, do you have any deep personal traumas you might inexplicably be compelled to share in this interview?
I thought I already made it clear I wasn't here to talk about me. You know why I'm here, and what brought me here. Hai Ou being stolen was bad enough; I don't need you giving me the third degree. My business is my own. Next question.
That's nice. So, if you've accomplished so much and you're still so young, just how long have you been playing the tuba?
I've already told you to look in a bio--hey! Were you even listening? Vi. O. Lin. Violin. Are you being deliberately obtuse, or are you just fucking stupid? If you can't figure out brass from strings, you have no right to be in control of an orchestra. I can't believe this.
If you figure it out, I'll be in my room. I'm charging the mini-bar to you. There'd better be something good in there.
