Character: Archie Jenkens
Series: Zombies, Run!
Character Age: Late 20’s/Early 30's
Job: English Tutor
Canon: Zombies, Run! begins with the same age-old (zombie) story: Scientists meddling where they probably shouldn’t have been, and accidentally - or maybe not so accidentally - creating a virus that has the nasty side effect of turning people into brain-hungry monsters. In the wake of the ‘Grey Plague’, new settlements have cropped up, as people band together to make the most of the new post-apocalyptic world. One of these settlements is Abel Township, small, but well-organized, and kept functioning primarily through the efforts of its runners, people tasked with collecting supplies outside the township walls.
Archie Jenkens isn’t, actually, a survivor living in Abel, but in its larger, more organizednot at all cultish neighboring settlement, New Canton. Though she was once a scientist – with a PhD in protein crystallography, a fact which…is sometimes hard for other characters to wrap their heads around – she now functions as Runner 20, a job which she rather enjoys. Literally. IIf Archie had to be summed up in one word, it would be cheerful. A few more words would be relentlessly, exasperatingly cheerful. The zombie apocalypse hit? Well, you know, she and her boyfriend got to camp on the roof of their apartment for a while! It was nice! That boyfriend is now dating another woman at New Canton? They’re cute together! Archie seems determined to find the good in any bad situation, and will get excited over the simplest things. This bubbly cheerfulness, and the fact that she will talk and talk and talk, can often make her come across as an airhead. In reality, she’s highly intelligent and knowledgeable about a number of different scientific fields. She is also perfectly capable of taking things seriously when it’s really called for, thank you very much. But a little fun never hurt anyone, did it? Everyone likes to have fun!
Archie is also one of the few non-native English speakers characters in her canon, and so has a rather endearing fascination with word-usage in English that sometimes borders on frustration.

Tell us about yourself in a few words.
Only a few words? Well, how many is 'few'? You know, English is SUCH a funny language. I will try to use only a few words. Hello! My name is Archie. I…suppose I can’t say it’s nice to meet you to a sheet of paper, can I? That would be a little bit silly. But, to whoever will be reading this: It’s nice to meet you! I am from New Canton, in England, and I am a runner. …Of course, that is, since the plague broke out and everyone went…you know. A little bite-y? No, I don’t think I can say bite-y, that doesn’t look right. Growly. Crazy. Yes, crazy. Anyway, I was not a runner before the growling and the biting and the crazy, and I was not from New Canton, I was from the Netherlands. I was a scientist. That’s why I was in England, because I was studying at Cambridge. Protein crystallography. I suppose I am still a scientist? I
like doing science. But I like running too! I like helping people.
Why are you joining our happy community?
Happy! I like happy. Happy is nice, isn’t it? I'm glad it's happy here. It does seem very pretty, with all the cute buildings! It's like a little town. Of course…New Canton was also like a little town, and I liked New Canton too. Perhaps I could just...visit here for a while? And then maybe I could go back. New Canton is home, you see. Well…it’s not really home, but it’s almost home, you know? It’s home NOW. I like it there, I like the people. What is that saying…home is…home is where the heart is? Yes, that is a saying that actually makes sense.
Still, I think your community is very nice! You have a lot of animals! Like the gorillas, who are….friendly? A little too friendly, I think. But so interesting! Purple is not a natural color for gorillas. Were they bred to be purple or were they dyed? Dyeing would make more sense, but purple would be so neat if it were natural! …Though I don’t like the color purple very much. I wonder if they could be bred for different colors….maybe a nice yellow?
Do you think you are good in a crisis? Why?
Oh yes, I’m very good. I am a runner, after all! It is our job to bring back supplies to the township, and to help other people, and sometimes even to spy! It’s all very exciting, but you must be able to keep your head. …That’s funny, isn’t it? “Keep your head”. It’s very true now, though. You must be able to keep your head, quite literally. And I can! I’ve rescued people, you know. Many times! I am very good in a crisis, you can ask anyone. They will say I am very helpful, I'm sure.
What if the crisis involved the end of the world? Please explain.
Well…..yes. Like I said, I am a runner now, because of the zombies. I do not think I would say that the world has ended, though. There are many people still alive, and we are rebuilding. Everything is not the same, but everything is not over, either. No, I would not call it an end.
…You know…you do have a small…problem yourselves, here. With the zombies? Yes, they are very slow zombies, and that is good. Odd! But good. Still, I don’t think they should just be walking around like that. I have seen children here, and that’s very dangerous! Irresponsible, really. You need to look into that, right away. Although, I guess I’ve been brought here because you know you have a problem? I will try and help, if I can.
What is your job here at CFUD? What do you think that means?
Yes, well, I am not so sure about this job! Like I have said, I am a scientist, and a runner. But my English is…I do not think it is bad, but I think you have gotten your assignments mixed up. I do like English! It is such a funny language. Like the word kerfuffle! It means an argument, doesn’t it? At least, that is how I have heard it used. A small argument, maybe? But it does not sound like it should describe an argument. It is all…soft! And cute! ‘Fuffle’, that does not sound like it should be used about an argument. So, I do not understand the English language, some of the time. I do not think I would make a very good English tutor. Maybe a science tutor was what you meant?
What would you consider to be your “soul” animal and why? (this is for purely scientific purposes and will not have consequences during your stay at all. Trust us! :))
Oh, I like this question! Much better than your other questions. Much more fun. My soul animal? I like dogs quite a bit! They are so cute, and fluffy! And they are very friendly. Well, some dogs are very friendly. Other dogs are not so friendly. If I were I dog, I think I would be the friendly kind. One with lots and lots of fur. Though, maybe I am…not very fluffy? Hmmm, what else could I be? Oh, a rabbit! With their cute little noses and their cute little tails, and going hop hop hop? And they are very fast! I am very fast too!
…Oh dear, I have run out of space. Do you think I could have another sheet of paper?
