Character: Ryugazaki Rei
Series: Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
Character Age: 16
Canon: Free is your typical sports anime about swimming. There’s tension, devotion to the sport and some really intense moments when people talk about water. But mostly it’s about a group of friends trying to recapture the magic of their elementary school swimming days by swimming together again. It’s a great plan, if you have at least four students to make a team out of. Which is where Rei comes in; poached straight from the track and field team by the overwhelming persuasion of one member of the swim team and the sheer beauty of the swimming prowess of another. Together they form a complete team and take their dreams to the national swimming stage.
Rei is interested in all things beautiful, and even though he hasn’t been swimming as long as the rest of the Iwatobi club, he has the resolve to do what he can. What he can do is a half decent butterfly stroke, a small miracle considering his first attempts at swimming ended with him sinking like a stone. Rei is often the voice of reason, grounding the other boys on his team when they get strange ideas, probably because he’s very invested in logic and theory. It makes him successful in school and gives him good insight into other people, although it can also make him a wet blanket. It’s a good thing he’s easily topped into things, otherwise between his studies and high strung personality he wouldn’t have any fun at all.

Tell us about yourself in a few words.
My name is Ryugazaki Rei and I am a third year student at Iwatobi High School. My best subjects are mathematics and chemistry. My hobby is swimming. It’s nice to meet you.
Why are you joining our happy community?
I was told if I came here I would find something beautiful. So far that doesn’t seem to be true, even the gorillas, which should be majestic, are a terrible shade of purple. What kind of awful breeding program do you have here to select for a color like that? And are you aware that you could never release them back into the wild like that? If you did they would be easily targeted by poachers or predators.
Can you swim? Y/N
Of course! I have logged more than 200 hours on theory research alone, not counting all the time I’ve spent putting that to good use in the water.
- Could you still do it under extreme distress? Y/N
This isn’t a very good question because you don’t say what kind of distress. Calling it extreme doesn’t do enough to say what kind of distress you expect us to encounter. I know I can swim if I accidentally inhale some water, but even the best swimmers would have trouble during a sea storm.
-- While dragging someone else to shore? Y/N
This is the sort of thing you should be teaching us, right? I mean, this is a camp with swim facilities and just because someone knows how to swim when they get there doesn’t mean they’re an expert by any means! I’m starting to think you don’t take this very seriously.
--- While something, let’s say a tentacle, tries to drag you under? Y/N
This is simply preposterous. I won’t answer a question like this, there is no possible way a tentacle would even be in an inland lake! Squids and octopi prefer open water, and even if there was a species that could survive in that kind of fresh water, it couldn’t grow big enough to grab a person. Or if it did, it would die off quickly because the lake couldn’t support two or more such massive animals.
---- How would you handle that situation?
I would not handle that situation! No one would! I already made it clear that it could never happen. Why would you even ask something like that? This isn’t even an effective psychological test because no one could have a normal reaction to it!
What’s your favorite animal?
I’m fond of most sea creatures, dolphins in particular are such graceful swimmers. But I would probably say my favorite animal is penguins. They’re graceful swimmers and crafty hunters and they live in some of the harshest most difficult conditions in the world. In fact, did you know that penguins have a gland in their heads that converts seawater into freshwater? Really they’re very fascinating animals!
Would you be able to dispose of the flesh of the undead? How?
This question is just too far fetched to be taken seriously. I can understand you’re trying to set an atmosphere for your camp, between the counselors dressed like zombies and profanity on your welcome sign, but this is just too much. There is no possible way the dead can come back to life. Muscles cannot move without the flow of oxygen through the bloodstream, and nothing that has died has flowing blood. It’s about as likely to happen as this whole place is to suddenly uproot itself and move to the middle of Kansas!
