Character: Jason Grace
Series: The Heroes of Olympus
Character Age: 16
Canon: Gods, half-bloods and monsters, oh my! These are the kinds of things that your average mortal can’t comprehend because of a veil of mist that hinders them from seeing the truth. The world is set during modern times where Greek and Roman mythology collide with everyday life. The burden of saving the world falls upon the shoulders of the offspring of a god-mortal coupling. They are half-bloods, or demigods. In having a godly parent, these children are blessed— or burdened— with various powers and skills based on their lineage. Once these kids are discovered, they become summer or full time residents of either Camp Half-Blood or Camp Jupiter, where they receive training and protection against monsters. At these camps, the heroes may be issued a prophecy that will change their lives completely. And one of the biggest prophecies of all time has begun to turn its wheels; one that would change the entire world.
How would you like to deal with all of that all while suffering from a case of amnesia?
Meet Jason Grace. Despite the fact that he’s had his memories stolen from him, he’s thrust into a world that feels somewhat familiar and challenges it head on. Confident, strong, brave and good-looking. All qualities that a hero should have, right? Jason has this in spades. At least, he’s able to front it without coming across as being arrogant. Being the son of Jupiter (or Zeus, as he believes) puts him in a position of leadership. People look up to him and expect great things from him. He has been raised believing that any sign of weakness is unforgivable and can potentially be dealt with by death. On top of all this, he has been pinned as one of the seven key players in the Great Prophecy. So, while he has to brave through his quest, he is attempting to collect and recall his memories that were stolen from him by a goddess. While he would never admit it aloud, there is a part of him that is worried about what these memories might hold— that it might change the entire fabric of his being if he finds out who he really is.
(Note: I am taking Jason from The Lost Hero, where his memories are still quite fuzzy.)
Sample Entry:
Tell us about yourself in a few words.
I wish I could be helpful on this. I’m Jason Grace and I think I’m around 15 or 16. I’m a demigod and son of Zeus. Bits and pieces of my past have been coming back to me, but I doubt you’d believe me if I told you some goddess took my memories. So, let’s move on.
Why are you joining our happy community?
They told me I was supposed to be here at this camp. CFUD, right? I’m not even going to pretend to know what that means, but I was directed here on my quest. I get the sinking feeling that this place wasn’t meant to be part of the prophecy.
Have you committed any crimes you were or should have been convicted from?
I keep trying to tell you that I don’t really know. Unless you’ve got some kind of rap sheet or some way to look this kind of thing up, your guess is as good as mine. Maybe then I’d have more answers for this. I just hope that isn’t the past that I’m trying to catch up to.
Are you lying on your previous answer?
Why would I lie about something like that? Honestly, I’ve got nothing to hide if I don’t know anything.
If there was a good dog and a criminal both hanging from a cliff and you could only save one, which would you save and why?
Now let me ask: what kind of criminal are we talking here? Are we talking evil sorceress level that will try to charmspeak me into handing over my life? If that’s the case, hand me some wax, let me stuff my ears, and I’ll get right on saving the dog. If the criminal is someone that has been unfairly tried or has a chance at redemption, I’ll consider it. Either way, the dog’s being saved.
Can you perform a flawless headshot? If not, and if your life depended on it, how many hours a week would you be willing to spend on the shooting range?
Depends. With a lightning bolt? On my good days, I probably could. Granted, there’d most certainly be a lot of other destruction than just the intended target. With a bow and arrow, you might want to ask my sister about that kind of thing. I mainly default to my sword or javelin, though.
Do you think you are good in a crisis? Why?
I’m pretty sure I’ve had to deal with my share of crisis situations, even if I can’t remember them. Every situation we’ve run into so far, my instincts have kicked into high gear and fighting feels extremely familiar. Pretty sure my training has been geared exactly for a crisis situation, even if I’m not even sure what that training specifically was. Granted, I did have some luck on my side.
What if the crisis involved the end of the world? Please explain.
Well, I’m currently on a quest that will result in either saving or destroying the world, so let’s hope I’ve got it in me.
